Healthy Communities of the Capital Area is working to rebuild a gleaning network in southern Kennebec county, and we need volunteers to help! Gleaning involves rescuing unsold or unharvested crops from farms and farmers' markets and redistributing them to those in need. It's a collaborative process that helps reduce food waste and support access to healthy food. As a volunteer, you will get the chance to connect with farmers and growers, support sustainable food systems, and reduce hunger within your community.
We are looking for individuals who would be able to assist in harvesting and clearing out unsold produce during the upcoming growing season. We also need volunteers to transport it to the Augusta Food Bank for distribution. Shifts would last about 2 hours, but timing is flexible. If you have other skills to offer in social media, outreach, photography, or any other ideas for how you'd like to be involved, we'd love to hear about them!
