Children's Discovery Museum

The Children's Discovery Museum was founded on the premise of education through play. The Museum is committed to the belief children learn best through a "hands-on", interactive approach. Exhibits, family programs, summer camps, and community events encourage role-play, exploration, experimentation and, ultimately, the discovery that learning is fun! The Children's Discovery Museum (CDM)incorporated in 1984 under the leadership of Julie O'Brien. CDM began with traveling exhibits in classrooms and other venues. It opened its doors to the community on August 1, 1992, at its first physical location in the historic Vickery Building, which overlooks the Kennebec River in downtown Augusta. In January 2006, financial problems as well as the resignation of it's founder Julie O'Brien led the Board of Directors to make the difficult decision to temporarily close the Museum, to reorganize and renovate the exhibits. In February of 2007, renovations were completed and the doors were re-opened!! In the fall of 2009, CDM relocated to it's current location at 171 Capitol St. Suite 2 still in Augusta. Since the move, we have seen a tremendous increase in membership and daily admissions. We continue to provide a place for children and their caregivers to play, learn and grow together.

The Children's Discovery Museum consists of many different exhibits for a child to learn through play. Examples of these exhibits include a play restaurant where kids can learn the importance of good nutrition while having fun making pretend sandwiches and healthy wraps. There is a pretend bank where kids can withdraw fun money and work online with a financial literacy program aimed at teaching children about banking.There is a grocery store, a multi-cultural music area, a Maine treehouse,a theater, an ocean touchtank with live animals and a construction zone with a real skid steer. There are fun weekly programs, as well as monthly special events and don't miss our vacation weeks packed with fun!
