Who We Are

The Maine State Museum aimes to educate visitors about the story of Maine and her people from the original inhabitants of 12,000 years ago to the present century using artifacts and specimens from our natural science, archaeological, and historical collections. The original mandate for Charles Jackson to collect geologic specimens came from the state legislature in 1836. Those were the first "artifacts" that started the museum. After the legislature passed an act in 1966 to create the museum, construction began in 1969 on the building that currently houses exhibits, office space, labs, and some storage. The building was opened in 1971 and has undergone many renovations and exhibit changes since then. Come see for yourself!

What We Do

The Maine State Museum is closed for significant repairs and upgrades to the building’s mechanical systems. The museum's volunteer program is currently inactive.

The Maine State Museum maintains collections regarding Maine's pre-history, history, and natural science.  The museum researches, interprets, and exhibits its collections for the benefit of the public. Its goal is to promote public awareness of Maine's natural resources and historical richness. We provide educational programming for students and teachers, families, and the general public.
