Who We Are

The purpose of the Kennebec Historical Society shall be to promote the study of the history of Kennebec County, Maine, the formation of collections of appropriate materials, and the dissemination of knowledge concerning the same. The buildings, lands, collections and intellectual property of the Society are held by the Society in public trust. The Society shall therefore govern the property according to the American Association of Museums Code of Ethics and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, with the guidance of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

What We Do

The Kennebec Historical Society was established in 1891. The purpose of the society is to discover, preserve and disseminate Kennebec County history. The society building at 107 Winthrop Street is a Maine State Archives approved alternative repository for local government records. With a membership of approximately 600, an active Board of Directors, and a permanent physical location in Augusta, KHS will function in perpetuity.
