Make a difference in your community by helping someone read better to increase self-confidence, increase their test-taking ability so they may gain that promotion at work, learn how to apply for a job on-line so they can support their family, learn English so they can navigate our systems better, pass the citizenship test, or be able to support their children's academic success. Tutors work in a learner-centered model one-on-one with their learner to support individual goals relevant to the learner. Tutoring can occur virtually over zoom, with the support of tablets provided by our agency for both tutor and learner, and there is some in-person learning possible as well. Please join us to put your skills to work to help someone else overcome barriers to self-sufficiency.
Tutor Orientation and Training will occur over 3 sessions. April 14, 21, and 28.
Orientation: Wed. April 14 -5:30-7pm Learn what literacy tutoring is all about, what the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LVA) program is, learn about the learners you might be able to help, skills needed (you do not need teaching experience) and time commitments. This session gives you the opportunity to see if literacy tutoring is a good fit for you – if so, you can join the following two sessions of Tutor Training.
Tutor Training: Wed. April 21 and Wed. April 28 5:30-7:30pm Learn techniques and strategies for tutoring adult learners in basic reading, writing, and comprehension, learn methods to engage reluctant readers, and understand various philosophy and approaches to adult learning. Learn how to support and engage new English learners in culturally respectful ways. Help learners expand their understanding and use of digital literacy, financial literacy and health literacy. Learn how we use a learner-centered approach that is driven by each individual’s goals.
Participants will be provided “Tutor, Eighth Edition” that includes research-based and innovative ways to help deliver instruction and facilitate effective tutoring. Sessions will include meeting a tutor, a learner, an ESoL expert, and our LVA technology expert.
Sessions will be provided over Zoom and presented by Virginia Marriner, Executive Director Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta. There is no cost. Participants will need to attend all three (3) sessions to be certified as LVA tutors. Pre-registration to receive the Zoom invitation is required by emailing info@lva-augusta.org Those who wish to attend the training sessions may pick up the training manual at the LVA office (by appointment) or have it mailed.
