Who We Are

Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec (LVK) is an affiliate member of ProLiteracy and is a member agency of the United Way of Kennebec Valley. LVK is one of 10 Maine affiliates and have been serving the literacy needs of individuals in the Southern Kennebec and Northern Lincoln County area for almost 50 years.

LVK provides free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring for adults who need help with reading and other literacy issues. LVK helps adults here from other countries to learn to speak, read and write in English. LVK promotes family literacy events in the community to engage parents in reading. LVK can help getting a high school diploma, pass a driver's permit test, read health information or learn more about finances.

Currently, LVK has a Technology Access Program in place providing like tablets to tutors and learners so they can work together virtually. Email for more information about this program.

LVK provides orientation and training to volunteers who are interested in making a difference through literacy. Improved literacy has a significant impact on poverty, employment, and well-being for individuals.

LVK just went operational with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and

we are excited to be a Local Program Partner with the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. We hope to open doors to a world of imagination and learning for children in our community.

As the world’s leading program for giving books to young children, the Imagination Library has proven its impact through years of remarkable achievements. Whether the invaluable time spent reading with a child, or the effects on early childhood literacy factors that have lifelong effects, the Imagination Library has a far-reaching spectrum of impact from the measurable to the immeasurable.

What We Do

LVK uses a learner-centered approach, working toward the specific goals of each learner. Volunteer tutors are trained and matched with one learner with a basic commitment to work together for one hour, once per week, for one year. (Actual meeting schedules are determined by the individual tutor and learner) LVK provides on-going training and support for tutors and maintains a new readers library for use by both tutors and students.

LVK works collaboratively with other local agencies through our Literacy Labs to support individuals with intellectual disabilities. LVK is a strong proponent of family literacy in the community and engages in a number of family literacy activities throughout the year. LVK partners with local Adult Education programs to further support English as a Second Language (ESoL) learners and those working on their high school degree. Volunteer tutor training is held four times a year and dates are available on the LVK website. LVK activities are overseen by an active Board of Directors.
